Witnesses say a strong explosion has struck a gathering of Shiite fighters in the central Yemeni city of Ibb.

It was not immediately clear how many people were killed or wounded in the explosion at a cultural center where the fighters, known as the Houthis, were preparing for celebrations of the prophet Muhammad's birthday this weekend.

No group claimed responsibility for the apparent attack, but Yemen's powerful local al-Qaeda affiliate has targeted the fighters in the past.

In September, the fighters gained control of Sana’a following a four-day battle with army forces loyal to General Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, the half-brother of the former dictator.

In the same month, Ansarullah fighters and President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi’s government inked a UN-backed ceasefire deal that called for the withdrawal of the revolutionaries from the capital once a neutral prime minister was picked.
